Ballyhaunis running again in November

Did anyone take any notice of tip to back Ballyhaunis at Listowel earlier this year ? It won.
The horse is named after Ballyhaunis because the owner’s mother came from the town.
It is running twice in November - in Thurles on the 18th and Fairyhouse - in a big race on the 28th.

Will Ballyhaunis beat Current Resession ?

A Horse called Ballyhaunis is running in the 5.40 at Listowel tomorrow (Fri 17th Sept 2010) - and maybe the people of Ballyhaunis should be backing their namesake to win. It is the odds on favourite in the betting - but can Ballyhaunis win?
One of it’s competitors in the race is a horse called Current Resession (no I haven’t spelt it wrong)

Tipsters have a few good things to say about Ballyhaunis ….

Totesport say “Ballyhaunis was a Maiden winner on the Flat at the Curragh two seasons ago. ran moderately on his only hurdles start last season, but definitely the one to beat here following his third behind Admiral Barry and Mount Helicon in the big amateur handicap at Galway.”

Racing Post says “This should be fairly straightforward for BALLYHAUNIS who may be given most to do by Current Resession”

“At The Races” also has good things to say about Ballyhaunis who is ridden by Ruby Walsh

“BALLYHAUNIS is fancied to step up on a satisfactory debut over hurdles at Thurles in November last year. With a couple of fine efforts on the Flat already this season, he gives the impression that he has improved from four to five years and Willie Mullins is sure to have done plenty of schooling work with this son of Daylami. Like the selection, Gala Dancer is entitled to have learnt a great deal from his first hurdling experience at Galway last month and he should be involved, while Current Resession produced two solid efforts at the start of the year and demands respect following a break.”

If Ballyhaunis can beat Current Recession and of course the other 17 horses - then the bookies in Ballyhaunis might be in trouble.
Then again …… the bookies always seem to win

I think I’ll have a few Euro on it just for the craic!!

Ted Webb Anniversary

Ballyhaunis clubs to honour Ted Webb
Ballyhaunis GAA club have linked up with Ballyhaunis Golf Club to mark the 30th anniversary of the tragic death of former Mayo footballer Ted Webb.

At the time of his death, following a car accident, the 21-year-old Ted Webb was a key member of the Mayo senior team.

The clubs, in conjunction with the Webb family, are organising a Team of 4 Golf Competition. Qualifiers will be played in July and the final will take place on the weekend of the Ted Webb U-16 final - an inter-county football tournament that has been played in Ballyhaunis every year since 1976.

Kung Fanning

Kung FAnning is a lady golfer who has seriously put manners on the men in Ballyhaunis by winning the club Matchplay singles title.

The competition is open to men and women and Kung, a 22-year-old native of Thailand, won the matchplay, beating six of the men en route to victory.

She was allowed a mandatory three shots in addition to her handicap as a woman playing against men in the competition - but as it happened, she didn’t need to avail of the extra shots.

Kung hails from Sri-Sa-Ket, a village in the north east of Thailand, close to Cambodia. This is the same area Tiger Woods’ mother hails from, and Kung’s late mother knew Tiger’s mother.

Kung met her husband Tom Fanning, a former Mayo and Connacht hurler, when Tom was in Thailand on a golfing holiday, and they married three years ago.
Kung had dabbled in golf in Thailand, mainly hitting balls in driving ranges, but she took up the game properly when she came to live in Ireland. Her first handicap was 28, and she has reduced that to 10.

During the summer of 2009 she won the Connacht Junior title in Athlone GC when playing off 19, and has won a number of prizes in Ballyhaunis, including the gross prize in the lady captain’s (Roisin Hill) prize.

Now her ambition is to reduce her handicap to single figures and to play senior golf.

World Record for Longest 5 a side Soccer Match

On Friday, April 9 “Club Next”, which has members from across East Mayo, , will attempt to play soccer for longer than 31 hours, and break the current world record.

The record breaking attempt will be at Barnacarroll Sports Centre in Claremorris on Friday, April 9 at 3pm.

“Club Next” is for young people aged between 15 and 18 years. Members come from Aghamore, Tooreen, Ballyhaunis, Bekan, Kilkelly and Kiltimagh. Helen Lenehan and Michael Lynskey, both from Tooreen, and Bernie Moran from Kilkelly set up the club last September to encourage older members to remain on in Foroige. They meet every Sunday in Tooreen and at present have 22 members. Sixteen of them are on the squad for the Guinness World Record challenge.

The other members will be helping out with promoting the event and with duties on the day of the event.. And in doing so, raise money . They hope to raise €5,000 for Special Olympics Ireland

Members of the public are invited to see the club try to break the record and if they would like to help out as volunteers, referees or as first aid supporters, the club would appreciate it. Anyone wishing to help can call Michael Lynskey on 087-2498045.

Anyone wishing to donate can send a donation to Sharron Lynskey, Cappagh, Tooreen, Ballyhaunis, or donate online at www.mycharity.ie/event/soccerchallenge.

The current record was only set a few weeks ago in Liverpool between fans of Liverpool and Everton . In that match - each squad had eight players and could use rolling substitutes but all had to remain within the arena, apart from during designated breaks.

Every hour of football played earned the players a five minute break and they took advantage of that by having a 20-minute break every four hours - to eat, take a shower or grab a short sleep. The final score ended Everton 489, Liverpool 686
