On Friday, April 9 “Club Next”, which has members from across East Mayo, , will attempt to play soccer for longer than 31 hours, and break the current world record.
The record breaking attempt will be at Barnacarroll Sports Centre in Claremorris on Friday, April 9 at 3pm.
“Club Next” is for young people aged between 15 and 18 years. Members come from Aghamore, Tooreen, Ballyhaunis, Bekan, Kilkelly and Kiltimagh. Helen Lenehan and Michael Lynskey, both from Tooreen, and Bernie Moran from Kilkelly set up the club last September to encourage older members to remain on in Foroige. They meet every Sunday in Tooreen and at present have 22 members. Sixteen of them are on the squad for the Guinness World Record challenge.
The other members will be helping out with promoting the event and with duties on the day of the event.. And in doing so, raise money . They hope to raise €5,000 for Special Olympics Ireland
Members of the public are invited to see the club try to break the record and if they would like to help out as volunteers, referees or as first aid supporters, the club would appreciate it. Anyone wishing to help can call Michael Lynskey on 087-2498045.
Anyone wishing to donate can send a donation to Sharron Lynskey, Cappagh, Tooreen, Ballyhaunis, or donate online at www.mycharity.ie/event/soccerchallenge.
The current record was only set a few weeks ago in Liverpool between fans of Liverpool and Everton . In that match - each squad had eight players and could use rolling substitutes but all had to remain within the arena, apart from during designated breaks.
Every hour of football played earned the players a five minute break and they took advantage of that by having a 20-minute break every four hours - to eat, take a shower or grab a short sleep. The final score ended Everton 489, Liverpool 686
