Westport 1-11 Ballyhaunis 1-5
WESTPORT got their Mayo championship campaign off to a good start when they beat Ballyhaunis last Saturday evening.

Ballyhaunis began fairly well and corner-forward, Isaac Carroll scored an early point to settle the nerves. However, it didn’t take long for Westport to come back . Damien Keane levelled the score after five minutes and moments later Eugene O’Toole scored a great goal. Three more quick points from Ryan Cafferky gave Westport a seven point advantage entering the second quarter. Fergal Kelly knocked over two frees to keep Ballyhaunis in touch, but Eamon Walsh hit back witha point for Westport.

A couple of points from Dermot O’Connor put Westport’s lead at six points. Those scores ended the game as a contest and even though Isaac Carroll hit his second point for Ballyhaunis nearing full-time, Eamon Walsh raced forward again to put the icing on the cake for Westport with a fine point late on.
