Ming Flanagan Tells of Torture in Castlerea Prison

In one of his Dail speeches in April this year - the TD for Roscommon and South Leitrim - Luke “Ming” Flanagan told the Dail how he spent time as a prisoner in Castlerea prison and experienced torture!

He told whoever was listening (probably not many) how … “

I was put in a remand cell on my own and experienced the torture of being able to listen to only one radio station, Midwest Radio, which was playing country and western music. How that did not put me off it for life I do not know.

Midwest Radio - it’s enough to keep criminals out of prison.
Maybe the Guards should use it as a threat to trouble makers - Midwest Radio all day in prison !

Monsoon Night Club

Someone was not impressed with Monsoon this weekend

Monsoon in Ballyhaunis:
OMG - what can I say…Women cat fighting and tearing strips out of each other Sat Halloween Nite (Oct 2010). Bouncers didn’t chuck the cat fighters out and they were at it twice again before the nite was out. As for *some* of the female dress sense - eh, you’d swear they were on The Game. Slapper dress sense and agressive drunk with it. Under age girl head dived off the stage as she was absolutelty plastered drunk. Saw her asleep in a pool of water in the ladies toilet later. As for the Ladies toilets - jeeze worst I’ve seen in awhile. Toilet attendent in there holding onto the soap dispenser like it was a gift - hello - we need soap on the counter, it’s not supposed to be a luxury!! Floors were soaking and puke in most of the cubicles - bad, bad, bad.
The only good thing was that the fancy dress costumes were excellent - well done to The Joker!! Good effort by all….loved the Avatar guy..v good.
Won’t be going back there anytime soon though….
Niteclub rating (this nite) 1/10 (and that was for the punters costume efforts only)

Fears of a Fifth Fast Food Joint for Ballyhaunis

RESIDENTS on Clare Street in Ballyhaunis have strongly objected to a new fast food outlet for the town.

The objection, signed by people living along the street, states that the proposed takeaway for Clare Street, is positioned directly across from Monsoon nightclub and would lead to antisocial behaviour.

The planning application, lodged by PJ O’Connor, is seeking to change the use of a ground floor retail unit at Clare Street to a fast food takeaway outlet.
In their letter, the residents say that

“Crowds converging outside a takeaway while waiting for a taxi always seems to lead to conflict and damage to nearby property. Clare Street is a largely residential area and the residents (some of them elderly) have already endured years of disturbance due to the proximity of the nightclub to their homes. We are in no doubt that a takeaway would further increase noise level and be a focal point for conflict,”

“In recent years, Clare Street has undergone somewhat of a facelift with the new Connacht Council offices, MidWest Radio and the new Credit Union building. A fast food takeaway would, we feel, serve no purpose but to diminish the streetscape and is not in keeping with the aspirations of the recently published town plan.

“We have a very active Tidy Towns committee who work tirelessly for the betterment of our town. Unfortunately, the excessive amount of rubbish generated by the takeaways in the town poses continuous problems for them each year when the Tidy Towns judges arrive.

“Late night revellers coming to our town show scant regard for the local environment and chip containers and burger wrappers are simply thrown on the pavement or on approach roads each night,”

“As your planning officials may be aware, there are already four fast-food outlets in Ballyhaunis – two on Main Street and two on Bridge Street. In our opinion, this is more than adequate to serve a small town – more indeed than some of the larger urban centres. “We earnestly request that the planning office give our objections serious consideration.”
